A Swedish company has been fined 25,000 kronor ($3,000) after a malfunctioning robot attacked and almost killed one of its workers at a factory north of Stockholm.
Public prosecutor Leif Johansson mulled pressing charges against the firm but eventually opted to settle for a fine.
“I’ve never heard of a robot attacking somebody like this,” he told news agency TT.
The incident took place in June 2007 at a factory in Bålsta, north of Stockholm, when the industrial worker was trying to carry out maintenance on a defective machine generally used to lift heavy rocks. Thinking he had cut off the power supply, the man approached the robot with no sense of trepidation.
But the robot suddenly came to life and grabbed a tight hold of the victim’s head. The man succeeded in defending himself but not before suffering serious injuries.
“The man was very lucky. He broke four ribs and came close to losing his life,” said Leif Johansson.
The matter was subject to an investigation by both the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) and the police.
Prosecutor Johansson chastised the company for its inadequate safety procedures but he also placed part of the blame on the injured worker.

Ever find yourself with a water-soaked low-battery phone? Sharp and Japanese network KDDI have a solution: the world’s first solar-powered waterproof cell phone. The phone, scheduled for a June release in Japan, can nab one minute of talk time or two hours of standby power from ten minutes of sun. The phone can derive 80% of its charge in total from solar power. It’s not a fast enough charging time to change anyone’s life, but it’s ideal for afternoons in the park or on the beach.
Details on Sharp’s phone are scant, with pricing yet to be released. The company hasn’t given a timeline on when the phone will be unveiled in the U.S., but Sharp’s cell phone will beat both Samsung and LG’s solar-powered models to market.
Samsung’s Blue Earth phone is made from recycled plastic bottles and features a built-in pedometer that calculates savings on carbon emissions from walking versus driving in a car. The phone will be released in the U.K. some time during the second half of 2009. LG’s solar model works a bit faster than Sharp’s–10 minutes of sunlight provides enough power for three minutes of talk time–but the company hasn’t yet hinted at a release date. The most exciting development in sustainable cell phones may not be solar at all. Kyocera’s kinetic energy-powered concept phone features a fold-out OLED screen that’s big enough for movie-watching.

“BMW’s MINI division will debut its first color-morphing car in Singapore in June. Called the MINI Chameleon, the car changes color according to weather conditions.
For example, on a rainy day, the car’s paint brightens to improve visibility while on a sunny day, it lightens to reflect heat and cool down the vehicle.
The color-morphing technology was made possible due to a special treatment called FeintPaint by Spanish company Payola Forlids.
Cars treated with FeintPaint comprises tiny magnetic iron oxide particles which can interact with a low grade magnetic field to change the spacing of the particles, and hence its ability to reflect light and change color.
The color changes take effect in seconds, and should be quite a sight to behold! Unless of course, you’re the owner, and you’ve no idea where you last parked your car in a multi-story car park. ”
It’s about time someone did this! Wished this color technology could be applied to the interior leather as well…nothing like black leather during the winter, but oh my is it toasty to the touch in the summer! Would also be cool if the cars color changed as you sped up on the highway, from a cool blue to a hot red the faster you went.
